Fort Boone Pump Station Replacement
This project consisted of relocating the Fort Boone Pump Station and upgrading capacity. The existing Fort Boone Pump Station was a recurring Sanitary Sewer Overflow and an aging pump station. This project included relocating the pump station downstream to allow for the future elimination of three additional private pump stations.
Vaught Tributary of Lower Howards Creek Stormwater Model Extension and Study
Palmer Engineering (Palmer) completed engineering analyses for the Vaught Tributary of Lower Howards Creek stormwater model in Winchester, Kentucky. With the goal of reducing peak flood stages in the watershed and improving water quality, four proposed alternatives were developed and evaluated against existing conditions at two different points of analysis along the stream.
UK Trunk Sewer C, D, and E
Palmer Engineering, and their sub-consultants, were selected by DWQ to design these trunk sewers. The project is located in a very urban portion of Lexington, part of which is in the heart the University of Kentucky campus. The project is thought to be one of the more difficult line-work projects in the Remedial Measures Plan because of the impacts it will have on traffic during construction.
Forest and Fitzgerald Storm and Sanitary Improvements Phase I
The Forest and Fitzgerald Storm and Sanitary Phase 1 Project is a proposed infrastructure improvement project in Erlanger, Kenton County, Kentucky, by Sanitation District No 1 of Northern Kentucky (SD1). The project is proposed to reduce flooding in the Forest and Fitzgerald intersection and reduce stormwater velocities through the existing open channel at 4118 Taylor Court.
US 20 Bridge Replacement - Ashtabula County, OH
Palmer Engineering prepared plans for the replacement of a 1930’s vintage, 27-span continuous concrete slab bridge that carries US 20 over two lines of Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. The crossing was complicated by a high degree of skew between the railroad lines and the highway as well as the need for the new bridge to span two additional railroad lines that may be added in the future.
I-64/I-65/I-71 (Kennedy Interchange, ORB)
Beginning in 2013, Palmer was directly involved in the design team’s decision-making process through weekly plan review meetings, standardization of project aesthetics, and structural components. Though not responsible for every bridge in the Interchange, we were apprised of ongoing design and construction decisions/features for every downtown bridge.
I-265 / US 60 Interchange
This project was part of the Phase I and Phase II design and environmental documentation for reconstruction of I-265 from south of the I-64 Interchange to north of the US 60 Interchange in eastern Jefferson County. The project was 2.3 miles in length, involves major structures, flyovers and ramps, and involved the full environmental examination of more than three alternatives at each Interchange, as well as all widening options between designated termini. At the time of design, the ADT on I-265 was 61,000 and 39,000 on US-60.
US 25E Intersection with KY 233 RCUT, Knox County
The US-25E intersection with KY-233 in Knox County experienced many angle crashes despite having been recently signalized with advance warning flashing beacons. As the lone signal in a long stretch of a 55 mph divided highway, Palmer proposed a RCUT to improve the severe angle crashes. The project team selected the RCUT improvement, and construction was completed July 31, 2018. During the three-year post construction period, this intersection has experienced a 74% reduction in total crashes and 71% reduction in fatal and serious injury crashes.
Vision Zero LouisvilleSafety Action Plan - Jefferson County, KY
In 2018, Palmer Engineering was selected to develop the Louisville Roadway Safety Plan. This plan is the first for a local agency in Kentucky and was prepared through the cooperation of Louisville Jefferson County Metro Government (LMG) and the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety. Through coordination with LMG, the findings of the study were incorporated in the Vision Zero Louisville Safety Action Plan. The methods, procedures, and lessons learned from this pilot study will be utilized for other small communities to develop similar action plans.
Wolf Run Water Quality Improvement Project - Fayette County, Kentucky
Palmer Engineering, assisted by Geotechnology and Redwing Ecological, completed this project, which included the Cross Keys Park Pond Water Quality Retrofit and Picadome Golf Course Stream Restoration, which were both prioritized project within the Wolf Run Watershed Based Plan.
Urban Planning Study - Ashland Downtown Planning Study, Boyd County, KY
Palmer Engineering developed conceptual alternatives for a downtown revitalization plan that required changes to the existing road network. The City of Ashland has a goal of improving walkability and safety to enhance business opportunities in the downtown area.
Statewide Ohio River Fracture Critical Bridge Inspections 2022-2023 - Various Counties, KY
The Palmer/HDR Team was selected by KYTC for one of the Statewide Ohio River Fracture Critical Bridge Inspection Packages for 2022-2023. Inspections were performed in accordance with the Kentucky Bridge Inspection Procedures Manual and the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Element Inspection.
KY 15 - Perry County, KY
the project also showcases Palmer’s experience designing a variety of structure types for KYTC. Structures designed for this project include two PCI-Beam bridges, a culvert extension, a retaining wall, and layout for over 200 ft of MSE wall.
US-31W – R-Cut Corridor
Originally a rural corridor with very little congestion, frequent openings in the median facilitated access and did not adversely affect safety. However, as development along the corridor increased, the frequent openings in the median, coupled with the expanding growth have contributed to increasing congestion and safety concerns.
Statewide Ohio River Fracture Critical Bridge Inspections 2021-2022 - Various Counties, KY
Palmer Engineering was selected by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) for one of the Statewide Fracture Critical Inspection contracts in 2021-2022
Graves Road / I-275 Interchange – Design-Build
Palmer Engineering is serving as the Lead Design Consultant on the Design-Build Team (DBT) for the on-going project to rebuild Graves Road from KY-20 to KY-237 and construct a new Double Crossover Diamond (DCD) Interchange for I-275.
McDougal and Castleman Creek Watershed Management Plan - Larue County, KY
